Abstract

Indonesia is known by the abundance of culture and art in each of its regions. One of the cities that has a
distinct cultural art is Ponorogo City in East Java. Ponorogo city is very well-known for its performance art
which is called Reog and Jaranan. However, in modern days, Reog and Jaranan have been constantly associated
with mystical beliefs and dark magic, therefore people start to abandon it. To resurrect the art of Reog
and Jaranan, a community known as PRAJANARA (Padepokan Reog dan Jaranan Surabaya) is founded.
This community is based in Surabaya and aims to conserve and develop Reog and Jaranan. This community
held various cultural festivals and performs in numerous government events regularly to raise public’s awareness
about the culture. They also conduct meetings called Sinau Budaya to share knowledge about Reog and
Jaranan. This community keeps growing and has potential to be even known, hence it needs a space to
accommodate their activities and needs. Through ethnography method, the author directly study the community’s
behaviours and characters, then comes up with a design of an open-space community space that answers the
community’s present and future needs.
